How to organise the perfect beach BBQ in Marbella

Adventure Editorial Family Fun Food & Drink Inspiration Parties

A unique gastronomic experience that can be hosted with family and friends

If you want to enjoy a dining experience on the beach without visiting a restaurant then a BBQ at the beach is a great way to do so.  In Spanish this is called a "Moraga" and you can cook meats, fish and vegetables on an open fire which are generally set up within old fishing boats on stilts in the sand.

From 12:00 to 20:00 the Town hall of both Marbella and San Pedro de Alcantara has allocated specific places where you have permission to start a BBQ and enjoy a dining experience on the beach in a different way than usual. You will need to ask for this permission in advance from the town hall of Marbella or San Pedro so this isn't an impromptu option but once you have had your permission granted you can go ahead and plan your perfect BBQ at the beach!
  • Step 1 is to visit the Oficinas de Atención del Ciudadano (OAC) which are located in either the Plaza de los Naranjos in the Old Town of Marbella or the Plaza de la Iglesia in San Pedro.
  • Step 2 is to ask for a Solicitud de Moraga or download it from the townhall website
  • Step 3 is to fill it out (remember your NIE/NIF) and you will have to indicate where you will host it, how many persons will attend and an approx budget for the event
  • Step 4 is to collect your permission signed and sealed

There are 4 zones permitted for Beach BBQs; one is Playa de la Vibora in Las Chapas, Playa del Cable in Marbella, Playa de Nueva Andalucía in Puerto Banus and Playa de la Salida in San Pedro between El Ancla Restaurant and El Arroyo del Chopo.  Look at the map in the gallery to see the locations more clearly.

Once you have everything granted simply make a visit to the local market that morning or supermarket to buy your ingredients and drinks, pack a BlueTooth speaker and have your favourite playlist at the ready and assign the jobs of Chef and also Barman between your friends.  There's not much more to it really once you have gained your permission and invited your friends just turn up, eat, drink, relax and enjoy!!

If you are set on a BBQ but the beach isn't your thing then you also have the option to go to one of the parks in the area which are equipped with BBQ stands made of stone and ready for you to just bring the coals and the ingredients you wish to cook! The Parque Vigil de Quiñones is a Forestal Park, is open all year round and they also have a section where you can take your dog off the leash without having to worry about a thing. The Parque de Nagüeles is also open to BBQ's from the 15th of October until the 1st of June (high season is not an option due to the risks of forest fires in the higher temperatures).
