La Cala Golf Club
Marbella
The La Cala Golf Resort is now the largest on the Costa Del Sol with three splendid 18 hole courses surrounded by the picturesque Andalusian hills. The natural features of the La Cala terrain have been used to challenging effect by the renowned golf course architect, Cabell B. Robinson. It has gained a reputation as one of the finest golfing complexes in Europe and attracts golfers of all nationalities.
The three courses are carefully maintained to ensure they are playable all year round. The Campo America is perhaps more difficult than the shorter Campo Asia but both demand great accuracy from the tee and careful club selection. Meanwhile, the third golf course, Campo Europa, uses the River Ojen in making the course distinctive. The layout allows for plenty of water hazards. All three offer different challenges to all levels of golfers and demand good course management in addition to a wide variety of shots. Accuracy is the key word and although the fairways are wide and the greens large, you will find the sloping terrain can punish any wayward shots. There is also some thick rough to avoid from the tees and the elevated greens require negotiating with the approach shot. You will find the course very enjoyable to play although some of the holes are very testing with lakes and ravines to cross. Whatever hole you are on take the time to breathe in the fresh air and admire the scenery.
The resort contains extensive practice facilities. It is the location for the only David Leadbetter Academy in Spain, which offers lessons and group classes for both beginners and experienced players, with multilingual professionals on hand to improve your game. Situated beside the six hole par 3 ‘executive’ course, the academy has a grass driving range, top-class instruction facilities including video analysis and a high-tech putting studio. In addition there are putting and chipping facilities.
Directions: La Cala Resort is situated west of Mijas in the hills. From the N340 take the exit road at Cala de Mijas. The course is situated about 7km ahead, directions are clearly signposted.
