Our guide to Benahavis by our Marbella local experts - Benahavis is a lovely little village set up in the mountains 500 metres above sea level, 7km away from the coast and a 10-minute drive from Marbella. It’s reached by driving through the Rio Guadalmina gorge up into the hills and it's best to park before you enter the village and walk in from there. The buildings are ancient, small and Spanish white, cut up by winding, narrow cobbled streets that are lined with orange trees.
Marbella East is a large area that stretches from the edge of Marbella and heads in the direction of Malaga, all the way to Cabopino.
Estepona is a traditional fishing village that has expanded to become a mini Marbella with a population of over 37,000, beaches, hotels, restaurants bars and clubs. It is located 25km from Marbella town centre and within an hour’s drive of Malaga. Tradition and modernity blend to perfection in this small seaside resort, which has a medieval city centre that preserves the charm of this Andalusian village with its narrow streets, its whitewashed houses and its balconies overflowing with flowers. The local government has invested a considerable amount over the years to create beautifully manicured gardens, lovely clean streets and brand new infrastructure.
Our guide to Gibraltar by our Marbella local expert - A day spent in Gibraltar is not one to be missed when holidaying on the Costa del Sol. Gibraltar is an overseas territory of the UK and still the site of a large naval base. It lies between Spain and Africa and is easily accessed through Spain by car or on foot (you will need to bring your passport for entry and in the case of certain nationalities you will also need to apply for a special Visa). To get to Africa there is a short ferry that takes you straight into Morroco where a wealth of shopping and culture awaits you.
Malaga is the second most populous city in Andalucia and is the sixth largest in Spain.
Our guide to Marbella by our Marbella local expert - Marbella is a city in the Andalusia province of Spain, half an hour's drive from Malaga airport. It is known for being the playground for the rich and famous and has become one of the most prominent beach resorts on the Costa del Sol. Marbella sits in the perfect location beside the Mediterranean Sea with the rolling Sierra Bermeja Mountains behind and with an average of 320 days of sunshine a year it attracts visitors all year round.
Mijas is known as the ‘White Village’, the reason for which is pretty self-explanatory when you see its hundreds of white-washed buildings. It lies on the west side o
Our guide to Nerja by our Marbella local expert - Nerja is a municipality to the east of Malaga and is a town that is steeped in history with many great attractions to visit while you are there. Once a small fishing village, it now has a population of over 22,000 inhabitants many of whom are British. Boasting 16km of beaches, and flanked by a stunning mountain range, the area is set in beautiful surroundings.
Nueva Andalucia is a newly built area, consisting of luxurious villas and apartments set amidst splendid gardens and trees, that has become a highly sought after spot for house buyers. The architecture is typically Andalucian and because of the elevation the houses are blessed with spectacular views of the Mediterranean and beyond.
Puerto Banus was opened in May 1970 by the developer Jose Banus. It is situated only 5km to the east of Marbella and has become one of the most famous ports in Europe with a plethora of super yachts filling the berths and many superstars frequenting the area. It’s synonymous with wealth, extravagant parties, high fashion and glitz. I doubt that Jose himself envisaged it would become the magnificent marina that it is today.
Up in the mountains of Malaga province lies the magnificent town of Ronda, split down the centre by a 100m gorge, known as ‘El Tajo’ that separates the medieval old part of the town from the 18th century part. Ronda is 60km away from Marbella and is very popular amongst day-trippers from the Costa del Sol reputed to be Hemingway’s favourite city in Spain.
Our guide to San Pedro de Alcantara by our Marbella local expert - San Pedro was originally built to produce a new agricultural colony and many of the original buildings survive today. In the main pedestrianised central plaza that is surrounded with palm trees you will find the Parish Church built by the Marques del Duero in 1866, it is in traditional colonial style and stands proud in the centre of the town.
Our guide to Seville by our Marbella local experts - Seville is the largest city in Southern Spain and the capital of the Andalusia region. Legend has it that it was founded by Hercules and is today one of the largest historical centres in Europe. Seville is a friendly and captivating place to visit with so much to see and do. The best place to start is at one of the tourist information booths within the city centre to get up-to-date information and see what’s on but here are some of Seville’s highlights.
Our guide to Sierra Nevada by our Marbella local expert - The Sierra Nevada mountain range is home to Europe's most southern ski resorts and due to its high peaks, tourists can ski from December (or November if the snow has arrived early) to the end of April/beginning of May each year. At the foothills of the mountains sits the city of Granada which boasts many great tourist spots and lots of things to do.
Our guide to Sotogrande by our Marbella local expert - Sotogrande is an exclusive section of the coast, with prime residential housing and sports clubs of all kinds. It is about 5,000 acres in total but encompasses all you could ask for when looking for a pleasurable holiday. It’s situated on the coast only 15 minutes from Gibraltar airport and 25-35 minutes from Marbella. Developed on since 1964 by the American Joseph McMicking it is now home to golf clubs, beaches, bars, a marina, leisure centres and polo clubs.
Our guide to Tarifa by our Marbella local expert - Tarifa is a small town in Cadiz about an hour and a half drive from Marbella and it has some of the best beaches in southern Spain. Known as a playground for surfers, windsurfers and other water sports enthusiasts because of its 10km of white sandy beaches, Tarifa is the southernmost point of Europe and enjoys fantastic views of Africa on clear days.
